TomTom XL 340T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic Edition) Review

TomTom XL 340T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic Edition)

just received my new GPS today, plugged it into my mac, and installed tomtom's mac version of their home software. everything has worked well so far and the free map update installed fine. there are two main things that purchasers need to know:
1) space is very limited on the device. there is only 2 GB of internal flash memory and out of the box there was less than 50 MB free. the very first thing you should do is to delete voices in languages you don't use. this will free up a couple/three hundred MB. they can get backed up to your computer so you could always put them back in the future. once a bit of space is freed up you'll be able to update the device without issue. after removing spanish and french voices, running update which installed a new dave voice, and then installing the free map update i was left with 89 MB free. when i tried to run update before removing the voices, the unit warned me about lack of space and aborted without creating any further problems. maybe the mac version of home is more robust than the windows one in this respect.
2) the device only supports USB 1.1 transfers which max out at a bit over 1 MB/sec and can be slower. so doing a full backup or a map update will take quite a while (1-2 hours) and this is normal.
for me, those limitations are more than offset by the large, bright screen, text2speech capability, crowd-sourced map/route updates, and cheaper southern africa maps (we're moving there soon). especially given the cheap sale price i found. i will provide updates as i put unit through paces on cross-country trip and then intercontinental move.....

TomTom One 130S 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

This is my first GPS purchase. I researched various products at wildly different pricepoints on the web before choosing the refurbished TomTom One-130-S. While it may not have all of the bells and whistles of the more expensive models, it is very functional. I was somewhat disappointed that TomTom's "Latest Map Guarantee" does not apply to refurbs, but a call to customer service led me to find that the unit's map was only about six months old...so no problem. I've tested the unit on destinations that I normally travel and found that when I deviate from the suggested route, the TomTom quickly recalculates wihout insisting on making a U-Turn. I've also used it on trips to unfamiliar areas and was very pleased with the quality of the direction. The feature of having the voice identification of street names is definately worth the few extra bucks over the standard One-130. I am very pleased with this product.

Bought this unit as going to visit the USA next year and wanted a unit with US maps onboard.
Worked well from the box - instructions could have been better in charging and connecting to computer to charge unit.
Downloaded NZ maps for use now so can get used to using GPS unit.
Maps work fine and have had no problems yet with the Tomtom attachment device coming off. Attachs to windscreen easily and is easy to remove.
Tried out on trip at night and the unit took me by a route I would not have considered normally but it did save time as took me by some country roads.
Would recommend. Only difference in refurb unit is the map guarantee is not operational as is not a "new" product.

TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) Review

TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is the latest in TomTom technology. The TomTom 130. This latest development from TomTom will be perfect for first time GPS buyers who are looking for something simple, compact, and accurate. For previous owners of the TomTom One however, this is no reason to upgrade.
The product itself is as close to perfection as I've seen in a basic GPS device, hence the five star rating, but then again so is the TomTom One 3rd edition that was released late last year. The TomTom 130 model is basically the TomTom One with a few minor upgrades. The most notable would be the new flip and fold mounting capability. Instead of the standard suction cup mount that TomTom owners are used to owning as a separate component (one that slides in and out of the back custom grooves of the TomTom itself) there is now an attached mount that folds into the unit for easy storage. This is convenient but in my opinion and like the other minor upgrades, no reason to toss out your old TomTom One in exchange.
iPod has set the standard for a lot of electronic thresholds, none being more noticeable than the size and depth of its products. To some it up...slim is in and the TomTom 130 is even slimmer than its big brother the TomTom One weighing in at a 6.1 ounces and only 1 inch in depth. Here are the some minor specs:
Unit Size: 3.8"H x 3.2"W x 1"D
Display Size: 3.5" (Diagonal)
Weight: 6.1 oz
Also worth noting is the TomTom 130 now boasts a 3 hour battery charge instead of the paltry 2 hour that left TomTom One owners completely dependent on the cigarette chargers in their cars. 3 hours isn't exactly a wealth of time but it is an improvement and a little more realistic.
Also included with the product is TomTom's exclusive Map Share feature that allows users to make their own map corrections and share them with other TomTom customers through their online connection using the TomTom Home software on their PC. This service is free of charge.
This has been the subject of some confusion among TomTom users and should be pointed out. Some customers mistakenly think the Map Share updates they receive are entire map upgrades. This is not so. Although TomTom does provide its customers with Map Share updates free of charge these only include minor map modifications, such as dead end streets that weren't marked properly or points-of-interest that were marked out of place. These Map Share updates do not include the miles of new roads being built every year across America & Canada. In order to receive these major map updates customers will have to pay for them.
Of course the TomTom 130 will already come included with the latest Tele Atlas which is now version 720.1802, and although TomTom has major map upgrades throughout the year most customers (including myself) will be content with just paying for an upgrade once a year. This guarantees that you will always have the latest maps with the newest roads.
Like the TomTom One 3rd Edition the TomTom 130 comes with a "Help Me" button which when pressed opens features such as "Phone For Help" which displays emergency numbers for the current location (such as and typically 911) "Drive To Help" which show you the quickest way to the nearest police station or hospital and a "First Aid Guide" which is provided by the British Red Cross.
Also included in the safety features is an option to sound a custom alarm if any of the following occur:
1. When approaching a school or church
2. When driving faster than a set speed
3. When driving faster than allowed
The 130 still uses the same TomTom touch screen user-interface so prior TomTom users will already be familiar with the controls but with such a user friendly design even new customers will have the hang of it in no time. The screen is a bright 3.5 inch full TFT color LCD with 320 x 240 pixels that supports 64K colors.
For first time GPS buyers this unit is perfect because of its price, portability, latest maps, outstanding user-interface, and simplicity. For someone looking to upgrade to something a little more advanced try the TomTom 130S with text-to-speech capability (verbal pronunciation of street names).

This GPS does not have enough memory space to put in the updated maps and you have no option to expand the memory (SD card slot). If you are just using it for the US then it is okay. But if you are using this GPS for traveling abroad then you would be doing a lot of back up then downloading again when you need a map - too much work for when you are on a holiday. Get the Go 930T, which is what I bought last year but was stolen in the car.

TomTom VIA 1405TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps Review

TomTom VIA 1405TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic and Maps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace my 2-year-old TomTom XL 340S, mainly because I wanted lifetime map updates which were not available when I bought my XL. I hooked both units up in my car and drove around for an hour to compare them. A couple obvious differences are that the VIA units are slightly thinner and lighter than the XL series, and the VIAs have a slightly better screen, although honestly I could barely tell the difference. Diagonal lines are a little less jaggy on the VIA if you look closely, but the increased resolution does not make much difference. The font size is slightly different as well. The font for the current street is a little larger on the VIA, but the font for the next street to turn onto is slightly smaller, which you can see in the screen image on this site. The street name is green and white and meant to look like a highway sign. The fonts were perfectly fine on my XL, and they are fine on the VIA as well. One thing that they changed, and I think this is new for the VIA line, is that when you are approaching your destination it will tell you if it's on the right or the left. With previous generation TomToms you could see which side of the street your destination was on by looking at the screen, but it didn't announce it audibly. It's a slight improvement, but not a big deal in my opinion.
As far as navigation, the two units were pretty similar when giving directions. I noticed that in some places the Lane Guidance screen would kick in on the XL while it did not on the VIA. I think they have tweaked the software a little after realizing that there were times when Lane Guidance was coming on when it wasn't really needed. Also, I noticed at one exit that the XL said to exit and "go straight on," (although the screen showed a left turn with an arrow) when in fact it should have said exit and turn left. The XL got it wrong, the VIA got it right. Again, that was probably just the result of improvements that have been made to the software in the last two years. Also, the XL would say "take the exit toward Erie, PA" (spoken as "pa" as in "papa"), whereas the VIA just said take the exit toward Erie, and didn't mention the state. It's kind of pointless to say the state in that instance, so just saying a city and leaving it at that is fine.
And now for the best feature. The reason I would not consider any other brand of PND right now is because TomTom is the only brand with the excellent EasyPort Mount. I only use my PND when I travel by air and then rent a vehicle. In my opinion, having the mount built-in to the unit is great. It is much easier to pack and carry than it would otherwise be with a mount that is a separate piece of hardware. I've had no problems with the EasyPort Mounts on both of my TomToms. They work great!
I didn't want the traffic or Bluetooth options, so I went with the "M" instead of the "TM" and the 1405 instead of the 1435.
Overall this is a great PND. I highly recommend it to anyone who takes along a PND for use in rental cars. The EasyPort Mount is excellent and makes for a compact and easy to transport device, and TomTom is the only company that offers it.

TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps and World Maps Review

TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic and Maps and World Maps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
History with GPS Navigation:
I've used built-in Honda (Alpine), standalone Garmin, and Ford 'Sync' audio GPS navigation devices.
I loved the Honda navi for its size, and I hated it because updates were sparse and expensive.
I loved the Garmin for being up-to-date but I hated it because it always seemed to change its mind a lot, or direct me into strange areas.
I didn't really care for the Ford Sync navigation, as it wasn't a visual navi. Included for free with the car, but I choose not to use it. Maybe only good as a 'back-up' in case the TomTom fails-- though I don't think it ever will.
I sold my Honda and needed a new navigation system.
I bought the XXL 540TM for...
1) Screen size
2) Frequent map updates (4x a year + Map Share)
3) Ability to customize it (lots of settings to play with)
4) Well Known & Quality (I've always heard 'Garmin' is the best, but when I've tried Garmin, I didn't like it!)
5) Lane Guidance
6) IQ Routes (figuring out which roads were best to use)
By the way, in case you were wondering the "TM" stands for "Traffic" and "Maps", indicating there are free traffic and map updates. I had NO problems entering the "Lifetime Maps & Traffic" code provided.
What's in the box:
-> GPS device itself
-> Window mount (with suction cup)
-> Dashboard 'sticky' pad
-> USB cable (to connect to PC)
-> Car Power adapter
-> Set Up Guide
-> Slip of paper with 1 code, valid for Lifetime Map/Traffic updates
The first thing I did was hook it up to my PC and run all the updates. (A newer map was available + GPSFix + Map Share.) It took about 1.5 hours to update all of it. After it was done, it took up about 96% of the 2GB built-in memory. (I didn't check how much it used before updating.) Not a lot of 'wiggle room' to add more features. No built-in SD slot to add memory, either.
One major downside is that I don't like how easily the device 'pops off' the windshield mount. (See further explanation under "The BAD" below.) I am considering getting a (non-adhesive) weighted/padded mount to put on the dashboard.
The GOOD:
+ Screen size met my expectations. Easy to see everything on the screen
+ Startup time (including time to lock onto satellites) seemed fairly quick
+ Roads were up-to-date and labeled properly. Didn't find any errors
+ Allowed me to customize just about everything I wanted to.
+ It functioned perfectly as a Navigation device. This is where I felt Garmin was lacking. With all the features a Garmin has, it never seemed to 'navigate' the way I liked. Of all the features, the 'Navigation' is the most important, and TomTom does it well from what I've seen.
+ It pronounced some 'hard to say' roads perfectly! I'm sure I'll find some that are not right, but Garmin/Sync had a hard time saying road names.
The "OK":
+- Traffic is only updated by RDS (sent by local FM radio stations). This is what I paid for. RDS updated only major roadways (Interstates) and marked some accidents / road construction / road closures. It only worked when the power cord was plugged into the accessory power port on the car (as the cord functions as the antenna.) I would have preferred TomTom's GO/Live line of products which has a built-in 'cell phone' to grab more detailed and current traffic information. But, these were out of my price range. The XXL 540TM does "just enough" traffic to make it useful.
+- It takes some time to calculate a long distance route. But, I also know that it is using IQ Routes to choose the best roads. It seemed 1 or 2 seconds longer than it needed to be, but certainly not a huge problem.
The BAD:
- Internal memory not expandable. 96% used up without any 'extras' installed? Hope I don't need more...
- When browsing maps (dragging my finger) it is a bit 'laggy'. I don't expect perfection, but it seemed sluggish. Fortunately, I don't plan to browse maps often, so I'll deal with it. I tried turning off Points Of Interest (POIs), and turning off 3D maps (using 2D maps instead), and it really didn't seem to make a difference. I'm impressed with the detail it showed, but wasn't thrilled about waiting 10 seconds for the entire screen to finish 'drawing'.
- Windshield mount seemed to 'pop off' too easily. When suctioned to the windshield, I have to use 2 hands to 'hold' the GPS and keep it attached to the mount while I adjust. I suppose it is useful for people who leave the mount stuck on the windshield. I prefer to remove the device AND the mount and hide them when not in use. (I figure a thief will know that the mount is for a GPS, and that the GPS is hidden in the car somewhere.)I have yet to try this out on a LONG or COMPLEX road trip, but I have no doubts from what I've seen so far that it will be just fine.
OVERALL, I'm happy with the device. Happier than I was with Sync, Alpine, or Garmin. I consider myself an 'Average' navigation user (not a beginner, not an expert) and will update the review after using it more.
Sidenote: I ordered through Amazon, using "Beach Camera" seller. It was delivered ONE (1) business day after I ordered it! I used 'Standard' shipping, and FedEx (Home service) had it delivered fast. Very pleased with Beach Camera's shipping emails and speed!
=========================
UPDATE 11/18/2010:
I thought I'd provide an update after 6 months of using this TomTom device:
1) I am still very happy! It's the 1st GPS I've used that "just works" and I'm glad I don't have to mess with it.
2) I've mastered the technique of adjusting the screen position while simultaneously holding the suction base. Back in May when I first reviewed it, I was concerned about how 'easily' it popped off. Now, it is still annoying, but I've minimized the amount of times it happens by holding it appropriately. It doesn't annoy me enough to buy a different stand/holder.
3) The suction cup still holds on quite well. It hasn't fallen off yet. (I attach/detach from the windshield every time I use it.)
4) Traffic Receiver: I've been satisfied with alternate directions/road closings. It is quite accurate, even in rural areas where I didn't expect road closures to be displayed.
5) Long-distance travel: I've used it for a few long trips (1000+ miles) and had no problems whatsoever with it. I found the 'estimate' of time to be extremely accurate. It was no more than 10 minutes off. (I calculated the time I stopped for gas and added it to the original estimate.)
6) Battery life: I've found the battery life to be holding a little less charge than it used to, but nothing that I feel is alarming. Most of the time, I have the power cord connected anyway (so I can grab the traffic updates with the antenna built into the cord.)
Overall, this is my favorite GPS. I've been hooking it up to the computer less and less (meaning I am forfeiting new 'map share' corrections). I even decided NOT to get the latest map update. Why? Well, I feel everything is working just fine the way it is. I may update if I have the free time. This is in sharp contrast to my previous GPS experience, where I'd pray for updates to fix stubborn issues. The TomTom is just fine and I have had no major complaints. I am NOT in the market to buy a new GPS because I'm finally satisfied.

TomTom XL 335TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) Review

TomTom XL 335TM 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic and Maps Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I move to the Dallas/Fort Worth area at the start of 2010 and I found out the hard way that I really needed lane assist on my GPS. I was frustrated with the Garmin I had, which was an older model and it needed a map update. So I needed a GPS that had lane assist and found this one with life time map update and traffic. I had only used a Garmin so I wanted to try a Tom Tom out and the XL 335TM wasn't on the market yet. So I went and bought a 340 to use in the mean time. I found the maps more accurate with the Tom Tom. I could start entering my destination while still in my apartment complex setting still. When I done this on the Garmin it thought I was on the near by interstate. It kept saying recalculating when I would get out onto the freeway. I used the 340 for 13 days since that was as long as I could before I couldn't return it for a full refund. I then went and tried out a Magellen with a 7 inch screen. The unit was so heavy it kept falling off the windshield. The maps was the same as the Garmin, couldn't enter my destination while setting in my apartment complex. Only the Tom Tom had the streets of the apartment complex in its maps. Then I quickly returned the Magellen, which I did not like. The Magellen couldn't find some addresses and wouldn't even let you enter them. However, once you got to the place it would show the address correctly. I also tried a new Garmin which didn't correct the situation of knowing I was at my apartment complex and not on the near by interstate. I was able to try all three major brands and I can tell you I am so please with the Tom Tom which has by my opinion the BEST MAPS. The unit came with the traffic interface cord and the IQ maps works great in the DFW area. It will route you around the heavy traffic and get you to the destinations quicker. Sometime I have to go out in the middle of the night, it will take you on the interstate and most direct route, but during the day it will take you to a different route but get you there faster then the interstate. I like that. If you ever think you will be in a large metroplex area even once let me advise you to get a GPS with lane assist. You will have to glance up at the unit to see in the lower left hand corner what highlighted lane you need to be in. You can't always depend on what it is saying. Also it will let you know if you are going too fast in the lower right hand corner. The basic operation is a little different then the Garmin and the Magellen, but now that I am use to it I like it better. It is a lot easier to find as designation with zip code and I am used to a QWERTY keyboard layout which is the default setting. One other thing I might add is that you have to use the USB cable that came with the unit to update it. The cable that came with my camera would fit, but kept saying the Tom Tom was unknown device. At first I thought it was the Tom Tom unit itself after the first update, but I was using the wrong cable. Also the Tom Tom servers that update the software with have a slow connection. The update took almost an hour even with my fast 12 mbps connection speed. When picking a GPS unit you really have to ask yourself what features you want. I recommend the lane assist feature in this GPS unit. It has saved me a lot of wrong turns.

TomTom XL 340-S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

TomTom XL 340-S 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
just received my new GPS today, plugged it into my mac, and installed tomtom's mac version of their home software. everything has worked well so far and the free map update installed fine. there are two main things that purchasers need to know:

TomTom VIA 1405M 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps Review

TomTom VIA 1405M 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters Review

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this unit for Christmas primarily for my bike, but once I purchase the car mount adapter it will be used in the car as well.
This is an excellent unit, to say the least. One reviewer mentioned that it's too difficult to turn the unit on- I say "hogwash". The pushbutton is stiff, yes, but that's done to keep the unit from turning on accidentally while in your jacket pocket or carry bag (and with a touch screen, you can well imagine how much mischief one could accidentally create if it turned on without your knowledge). Ditto with the Scala Rider headset- you don't want the thing accidentally turning on, running the battery down, do you?
Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't have a "speedometer" or trip meter function- it most certainly does have a speedometer, and what I assume is the "trip meter"- but since TomTom set the unit from the factory to eliminate as much extraneous information as possible, you have to activate it in the menus. Once that has been activated, it'll be there until you turn that feature off. In fact, there are a great number of features you can turn on and off in the menus.
I found the documentation to be adequate, and to the point. The printed documentation is to get you up to speed until you charge the units and turn them on- it's easy sailing after that. The unit is very easy to use, and it has tutorials right on the unit, so in my opinion further paper documentation is rather redundant- actually, I think it's pretty smart on TomTom's part to include tutorials on the unit itself rather than supply a printed book- that way I don't have to carry around the book, as all of the information is already on the unit! They really don't say much about the bike power cable, but I can certainly understand why- it's not possible to provide information about every bike out there, and if you aren't familiar enough with your bike, or can't figure out how to install it, it's probably best to get someone who is (like your bike dealer) to do the installation.
I've got a Motorolla Razr phone, and the TomTom easily hooked up to my phone via Bluetooth, and it painlessly downloaded all of my phone numbers I have stored on the phone (thank you for providing this helpful feature!).
I do wish that it gave the street name when it gives you instructions to turn, but I soon got used to how it works- not only does the display give you very clear instructions on where to turn, it also gives you the street name. Once you get used to it, it's easy. But I would like the option of hearing the street name (my PDA does, but the map display isn't as easy to see as the TomTom). While playing with the unit as my father-in-law drove the car, I discovered one potential issue with having the street name spoken to you- what happens when the street name is changed, but your maps haven't been updated? If you rely on the spoken street name, you might miss it- it's best to take a glance at the screen to make sure you're taking the correct turn (I found one such road- the name has recently been changed, but the map showed the old name instead). Still, I'd prefer to have it spoken, and visually double-check the map.
Overall, I give the TomTom an A-. TomTom, if you're reading this, I'll give you an A+ if you guys update the software so that it'll give you the street name by voice- then you'll have the best bike GPS available! However, I'd still buy the unit as is. It would just increase the functionality by including this feature.

TomTom XL 350T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic Edition) Review

TomTom XL 350T 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
****Update****
I changed my review of this GPS from five stars down to three stars for a few different reasons and I ended up taking the GPS unit back to the place I purchased it from (it was very hard to walk away from the $129 sale price) and purchased the TomTom XL340 TM.
The main reason I traded this unit in for a new one was the user interface. I completely understand that TomTom wants to create a simple user interface geared towards the 80% of people who want a simple and easy to understand GPS unit. On this, the XL 350 TM performs exceptionally well. However, if you want to really customize the GPS to do things for you, then you are out of luck because you cannot update very manypreferences in the unit. I like to tinker with the GPS unit and in the end I want ultimate control over what is on the screen and what information I can or cannot get. The 350 TM does not give you ANY leeway to set up the GPS in the exact way you want. If you see the words "Easy Menu" on the box and you like to have control over everything the GPS displays then the unit will not be for you. If you want simple and easy-to-understand-out-of-the-box performance, then this GPS will work fine.
The XL 340TM GPS uses the old menu system from TomTom. I ended up paying $60 more for this GPS but it was important to me to be able to customize the menu system. This unit also has lifetime maps and traffic and this was my main reason for buying a new GPS. Instead of two options on the main screen, I have ten. Under the preferences menu this unit lets me check seven different boxes under the Safety Preferences menu. Additionally there are two other sub-screens under this that let me set when I am driving on the wrong side of the road and to choose if I ever want the map display shut off. I can also change the information displayed on the status bar and on the 350 I could not. There was no compass function that I could see on the 350 that is available here. It also lets me set up different information on the Quick Menu preferences and this option was not available on the 350 at all. It also lets me check off about 15 different items under planning preferences including things like avoiding toll roads, avoiding ferries, plan routes by fastest times, shortest routes, avoiding freeways etc. Under Advanced Preferences it lets you select options like displaying street names, house numbers before street names, lane images etc. You can also prepare routes on this unit and also build an itinerary including waypoints.
I also sent an email to the TomTom support team asking if there was anyway I could get and use the old menu system they used and was told that is was not possible. The problem with this response? It took TomTom over a week to answer my question. That seems like a very long response time and is another reason I took one more star off of my rating.
Overall the 350 was a nice unit and easy to use, it simply did not allow me to customize the GPS like I wanted to.
*****Update over*****
I travel a lot for my job and have used an older model Mio GPS unit to get me to my destinations. The Mio worked fine for the most part, but the last time I went to a new city the maps were very old and out of date. I decided it was time to upgrade to a new GPS unit and researched Garmin and TomToms because they are the two biggest players in the market. In the end, the lifetime traffic and lifetime map upgrades pushed me towards the TomTom XL 350 TM, a model that just came out at the end of May 2010.
In my research for a new GPS it seems that people either liked Garmin or the TomTom because of the interface. People usually had a strong bias for one or the other. The interface did not matter to me as much as what I could get for my money. I seriously looked at the Garmin nuvi 780 because this is a top-of-the-line Garmin, albeit a discontinued model, and Amazon is selling it for 74% off the original price. For the money it seemed like a fantastic deal except for two things. This unit uses MSN Direct content for traffic and you have to pay a subscription fee after the trial period ends, and MSN is discontinuing this service at the beginning of 2011. This unit did not include lifetime updated maps, which is a big deal for someone buying a new GPS unit simply because the old one had maps in it that are getting obsolete.
Since lifetime maps were very important to me (without having to shell out $100 more for the upgrade) my choices were suddenly locked in on TomTom units. I researched their products and decided I was either going to get the XL 540 TM (the TM is lifetime traffic and maps) or the same unit but with a smaller screen size, the XL 340 TM. I decided I was going to go for the one with the 4.3" wide screen, the XL 340 TM, instead of the bigger 5" screen because I read that the 5" screen is cumbersome for the window mount to handle.
Well the best laid plans sometimes go astray because when I went into Best Buy they had the brand new XL 350 TM on sale for $169.99 when the regular price was $229.99. I bought the unit immediately beacuse I figured the unit was very similar if not an improvement over the XL 340 TM.
Here are my first impressions after using the TomTom XL 350 TM for two days.
1.The design is sleek with a crisp and clear screen. My old Mio looks like a clunky old refrigerator compared to the new TomTom.
2.I wish TomTom had an external memory card on these units. I have read people have had problem updating maps because they have run out of room on the unit. Since I read about it, I was expecting it, and ended up backing up my unit and then deleting the French and the Spanish language functions to free up space. This freed up about 30 mb on a 2 gb flash drive. TomTom could fix this issue by simply making the maps of Canada, the United States and Mexico separate. Anyway, the fix of deleting the French and Spanish speaking files worked well.
3.The instructions are very skimpy in the box. There are basically no instructions on how to set up and install the new software on the device. This was not a big deal for me because I researched the hell out of it, but for someone like my mom this would be a killer. I connected the device to my computer and found the setup program on the device and ran it.
4.When you first plug the unit into the computer it takes an hour and a half to download the new maps and the GPS fix software. After it downloads all the software it needs, then you install the TomTom Home software. This is not really installed on your machine, but rather it is an account set up on a web site and the software seems to reside there.
5.Once you install the Home software or set up an account, the icons in TomTom Home are very easy to understand and use. I performed a backup of my unit and then I deleted the Spanish and French language files from the unit. If TomTom would ever install Mexico, Canada and the United States separately then space would not be an issue because most sane people would never rent a car or drive in Mexico unless you lived there, and then if you did liver in Mexico you most likely would not need maps of Canada. This is a very small issue but one that could be fixed with minimal issues.
6.Once you perform the backup and delete you install the software upgrade to the TomTom. This did not take long at all, maybe 15 minutes.
7.The window unit is very different from the Mio. I like the looks of it because it looks elegant. It is a little awkward to use at first, but after you get used to it then it works as designed. My Mio had a linchpin system to hold the unit to the window unit and over time I lost the linchpin so the design there wasn't perfect. This design is like a hip joint, a ball in the socket, and although it moves stiff (I bet in order to keep the GPS unit still) it functions well and had no problems holding the unit on the window or dash. It is easy to unsnap the unit from the wondow mounting device so you can take the GPS unit with you instead of leaving it in the car.
8.The user interface on the GPS unit is simple and easy to use. It is very intuitive and when you fist turn it on there are pop-up balloons there to help guide you through the process. By playing around with it for a bit I became very adept at doing what I needed to get done for the GPS unit to function.
9.I like the graphics on this unit. The GPS fired up and found a signal within seconds (my old unit took up to a minute or so to lock onto a satellite). I typed in the address of where I wanted to go, it plotted a route for me, and I hit the done button to get the 3-D view map on the screen. From there it is easy because you follow the prompts. The section on the bottom of the screen tells you which way your next turn will be(left or right) and it tells you how far away from the turn you are at the moment. This unit is accurate to within 5 feet or so of where my car was so it would be very hard to miss a turn. My old unit was only locked in from about 20 yards, which caused problems sometimes when I was on a freeway and passed my exit going 70.
10.I have not been able to get lane assist to work yet (I only drove local routes). This is part of the reason I bought this unit. From the pictures on other reviews it looks great.
11.I have no clue on how the routing is compared to my old unit yet. I will get a better judge of this over time. I like it a lot so far.
12.The screen is absolutely bright enough to see in the daytime. The sound is loud enough to hear the spoken street names and directions.Overall I highly recommend this unit. If anything changes in the next few months I will come in and update my review.

TomTom GO 2435TM 4.3-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic & Maps Review

TomTom GO 2435TM 4.3-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic and Maps

I have used several GPS units over the past few years. I started with a Garmin, which was great, then Magellan, then my cell phone. I liked the Garmin, most, until I got my cell phone, and so I returned it. I just got the TomTom, and frankly, was never really impressed with what they had to offer....until now. Quality of materials appears very good. I was not happy to not have a suction device for my windshield. Having the the disk mount on my dash is and advertisement to theives that I have a GPS and a chance for them break into my car and look for it (even though I do not keep it in the car)....so....I do not mount it. Now, I should mention that I LOVED my cell phone GPS. Traffic updates, etc., it was great, and included in my plan for no extra charge! Great. I was happy. Well, today we went to Staten Island (from Westchester), NY....about one hour and twenty minute drive. So, a battle of the GPS's was a no brainer. The controls on the TomTom are not really as intuitive as my old Garmin, but a hair better than my cell phone. The voice recognition is something else. It's amazing! It understood what we said with the windows open and driving at a pretty quick rate! Even my favorite bluetooth headset cannot do this. My wife and I were VERY impressed. Back to the battle.....I should note that today was the bike marathon, and we could have potentially gotten caught in a TON of traffic. Both GPS units took me pretty much the same way, but the TomTom had the more accurate ride. Unfortunately, both also took me through the crossbronx expressway, which is notoriously horrible and always backed up, on the way to NJ. On the way home, the TomTom brought me back the same way, and my cell phone brought me back a different way. Wanting to avoid the crossbronx on the way home, I followed my cell.....as I was doing that the TomTom informed me that there was a delay with its current route and asked if I wanted to change my route. I said yes, and it went the same way as my cell. The TomTom CONSTANTLY gives you instructions. It's annoying....I didn't really like it, however, my cell phone gave me very little, and going through New Jersey, I like the TomTom for all of it's reminders and guidance. The TomTom also informed me that there was a delay, but we were still on the fastest route......and what I REALLY like is that it told me how long the delay would last! That is a nice feature, especially for someone who does not want to be stuck in traffic. I feel that we put it through its paces and I think that it really did a good job. So much so, that my wife has decided to keep it....I'm stuck with the cell phone. You get lifetime traffic and 4 map updates per year for life, so keep your code to update your unit! It also has an option for traffic cameras! SWEET!
My only real problem is the lack of intuitive control.....and it is not completely lacking but enought to make this a 4.5 instead of 5 star review. Scrolling through the different maps is a little sketchy at first, and also a bit confusing, especially when I never had to read the directions for my cell or for me Garmin. Still, I rate the TomTom better than either of those. This is a solid unit, and it is spot on. If you happen to get pulled over for speeding, you better shut down your unit, because as I said, it is spot on....it matched my speedometer perfectly. Very impressive. Also, while my cell phone and the TomTom give the same directions some times, I found that the TomTom gives a more accurate ETA. I don't give out 5 stars easily, and this is as close to 5 as I can give without actually notching it up. I would easily recommend this unit over the other brands that I have used. Look no further folks, you have found your GPS!

TomTom XL 340M 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Maps Edition) Review

just received my new GPS today, plugged it into my mac, and installed tomtom's mac version of their home software. everything has worked well so far and the free map update installed fine. there are two main things that purchasers need to know:
